I released my first tape…yes, tape…in 1991, while in high school. Before that, I grew up breakdancing in the street and at skating rinks, battling for bragging rights. Around the time I discovered climbing, hiphop and I went on hiatus…creative differences, I suppose. When I found her again, it was by making up silly rhymes about rock climbing. Some of those were recorded as jokes, and because climbers are completely obsessive about all things climbing…they became popular. Who was I to fight it? I just made more. Now I make the beats, write, record and mix all the songs myself. That is, when I'm not at the gym or the crag!
Check out odubmusic.com to hear my tracks…some about climbing, some about life, some just to make you dance.
Initially, climbing was my way to stay off the streets and out of trouble. As a former gymnast, the movement came easy, and within 6 months, I had climbed my first 5.12 sport route. However, I climbed my first crack the same day, and didn't look back. Over the next 8 years I climbed only a handful of bolted lines, opting instead for the adventure of trad climbing. Attracted to the "dark" side, I tried my hand at offwidth climbing, and found my niche. Years of mangled hips, shoulders and knees took their toll on my mind and body, and I basically retired from the rock--climbing only 6 times over 3 years.
Now I've rediscovered sport climbing (I am a Red River Gorge local, after all!!), and a love for intense training. Two years later I've dispatched with over a hundred more 12s and 13's. I pride myself on being a well rounded rock climber, still dusting off the gear for an occasional bout with some nasty, flaring, man eating crack.
