"The Spirit of Climbing"
with Dave Anderson
Sponsored by NOLS

7:00 p.m. Wednesday
Noble Hotel Dining Room

Ascending snow, ice and rock is no longer a fringe activity undertaken by a small group of eccentric individuals. Today, climbing is big business and with the help of the modern media climbers are now divided up into separate groups with catch phrases like alpine, mixed, trad, aid, sport, and bouldering. On the surface, climbing seems to be buried in a pile of shiny new gear, but if you dig through the fluff and hoopla the heart and soul of climbing is still alive and thriving.

You won't find the core of climbing on the internet forums or "Hot Flashes" sections in the climbing magazines. The heart of climbing is found in the people who juggle careers and family responsibility, the climbers who work three jobs to save money for that road trip and still manage to train in the gym after a long day at work. Climbing is about making sacrifices to enjoy the movement found on the plastic holds, rock walls, ice flows, snow slopes and mountains. While some climbers find solace in going solo, for most the joy of climbing is about getting together with like minded people and sharing a passion found in the vertical world.

During the last 20 years Dave has established new routes in the Continental United States, Alaska, Canada, Chile, Nepal, India, Pakistan and China. Dave will share images and stories from his expeditions around the world, but the focus of his presentation will be on the climbs and climbers found in the great state of Wyoming.

Join Dave to celebrate the average climber, who sometimes sleeps in the dirt, retreats in the rain, pulls on quickdraws, eats food past the expiration date and measures success not by the number of summits under their feet, but by the smiles and memories experienced along the way.
